While I was in New Zealand, the World Sevens Rugby Tournament came to Wellington. So I my friends and I made our way to the bottom of the North Island for two days of non-stop action. The Sevens tournament is held in countries around the world but nothing beats the Kiwi’s love for Rugby and having a good time. To give you some perspective; New Zealand has won the World Rugby Sevens Series a total of 12 times while no other county has won more than twice.
The tournament is called ‘The Sevens’ because each team has seven players on the field (instead of the regular fifteen in rugby) and each match consists of seven minute halves.
The rugby games are exciting and thrilling.- but if you are not into rugby don’t fret. A major attraction of the Seven’s is the party. Everyone attending dresses up with their friends in a costume. At the games there is a lot of drinking going on, and outside of the arena there is even more.
After the games people flood the streets in their silly costumes to party and have a good time. In Wellington the docks are lined with boats and people throwing parties on them. All of the bars are packed and the downtown area offers its own party atmosphere. This is a great event to kick back, have fun and meet people from all around the world. I got to even meet some of the rugby players while out on the town!
My friends and I went as police officers and even though it wasn’t the most creative idea we had a blast. We even joked around with security that we were ready to change shifts with them. There were a lot of awesome and creative costumes from the event, here are some pictures to prove it.
The whole wild weekend was topped off perfectly when New Zealand won! And the best part about New Zealand winning? The team tears off their jerseys and performs the haka. The haka is a reason in itself to come watch the sevens- and to cheer for New Zealand. It was truly a bucket list moment for me. In case you haven’t seen the haka for all if its glory here is a youtube video of it for you to enjoy:
The World Sevens Rugby tournament was the craziest weekend that I had in New Zealand while living there- and after two full days of it I still hadn’t had enough. If you are interested in this event but not heading to NZ anytime soon, this tournament is held worldwide. You can find more information here.
